Why You Keep Procrastinating (and How to Actually Stop)
This takes like 10 minutes a day and you're golden
Let’s just cut to the chaseeeeee no bank.
Procrastination isn’t the real problem, it’s just the symptom. And once you understand what’s really happening in your brain, you can finally stop putting things awff.
We avoid things because our brain has decided they’re going to be painful, hard, or embarrassing.
Think about it. When your crush of the week (I hope you don’t have one of these this is just for illustrative purposes omg what about crush of the era) texts you back? You respond in literally 0.5 seconds. When you see a package on your doorstep you’ve been waiting for? You’re opening it immediately. But when you need to set up a high yield savings account or go grocery shopping or have that difficult conversation? Suddenly you’re doing anything but the thing.
Your Brain Has Been Playing Tricks on You
Every situation in your life has two sides, the good and the bad. Both are always there.
*Whatever you focus on becomes what you believe. What you believe changes how you feel. And how you feel determines whether you actually do the thing or spend another hour scrolling.
When you focus on all the ways something could go wrong, you get that awful tight-chest anxiety feeling.
But when you focus on what could go right? When you genuinely let yourself imagine it working out? You get a completely different feeling. That excited, energized feeling. Like when you’re waiting for a package to arrive or about to see someone you’ve been looking forward to seeing.
Here’s What Actually Works
You’re already SO good at getting hyped about things. New album dropping? You’ll stay up until midnight. Restock? Refreshing the page a million times. Your favorite show releasing a new season? Immediate pressing of play.
But getting excited about doing what you’ve put off? All of a sudden its crickets.
*Try this: write down all the genuinely good things that will happen when you do the thing you’ve been avoiding. Real, specific things that would actually make your life better. Then, and this is going to feel weird, read them out loud to yourself.
Yes, it feels a little crazy. Do it anyway. You might be surprised at how different you feel when you intentionally build your own excitement instead of waiting for it to oh I don’t know magically appear.
Stop Waiting for Future You
Here’s the thing about saying “I’ll start Monday” or “I’ll do it later”, Monday you isn’t going to be any more motivated than today you. There’s no magical future version of yourself who suddenly has it all together and wants to do hard things.
When your brain starts spiraling and imagining everything going wrong, catch yourself. Notice that you’re literally making up a story about failure. Your body is responding to something that hasn’t even happened yet. Then choose to tell yourself a different story. One where you see yourself succeeding.
Wot to Do Next According to Moi
Pick one thing you’ve been putting off. Could be anything, moving around some mula, a text you need to send, your skincare routine, a real conversation with God instead of just thinking about it someday. Whatever it is.
*Write down three specific, real things that would be better in your life if you did it. Read them out loud. Notice how you feel.
You’re not someone who procrastinates. You’re just someone learning to direct your focus toward the person you’re becoming. And that version of you waits for no one, clearly not even this version you. Catch up or get left fr.
What’s the one thing you’re finally going to stop putting off? What becomes possible when you take that step today?
1. Life is a constant celebration.
2. Everything is unfolding exactly as it should- for better.
3. My God takes care of me.
